The 2016 Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coin represented the first release of the tenth and final year of the series honoring the spouses of the Presidents. Overall, this represented the fortieth release for the series.
The obverse design of the coin features a front-facing portrait of Patricia Nixon designed by Richard Masters and engraved by Don Everhart. The inscriptions include “Patricia Nixon”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, “2016 W”, “37th”, and “1969-1974”. The latter two inscriptions refer to the order of the Presidency and the dates served in office.
On the reverse of the coin is a depiction of stylized figures standing hand in hand and encircling the globe. This is intended to symbolize Mrs. Nixon’s commitment to volunteerism around the world. Inscriptions read “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10”, and the precious metal weight and purity “1/2 oz. .9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse was designed by Richard Masters and engraved by Jim Licaretz.
The Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins were produced at the West Point Mint in proof and uncirculated versions. Sales of the coins began on February 18, 2016. The initial pricing for the coins was $815 for the proof version and $795 for the uncirculated version. Throughout the course of the offering, the prices remained subject to potential change based on the weekly average market price of gold.
A maximum mintage of 10,000 coins was established for the release across both proof and uncirculated versions. The ratio of proof to uncirculated coins would be determined based on customer demand.
